They hail from every corner of the world including various parts of the U.S. Past season, the American Protégé International Music Competitions were a great success with a total of 36 Winners Concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Isaac Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall. We continue to grow and attracted the largest number of very competitive applicants on record. We debuted the opportunity for talented artists to perform at the American Protégé Summer Gala Concerts at the world’s most illustrious music venues: the 2,800-seat Isaac Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall and 600-seat Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. By being introduced to new audiences on stage in New York City, one of the world’s grandest performance venues, participants can expect to have a memorable experience.įor all instrumentalists, singers, and ensembles alike, American Protégé has offered an unprecedented opportunity to escalate the scope of their talents to new heights. She also kept an eclectic assortment of instruments, from the melodica to a nose flute to the theremin, which creates sound from vibrations.American Protégé International Music Competitions are designed for young musicians, actors and singers on the path to a successful career. She’d stop anyone to talk and had a way of getting people to open up. The world knew her Nana as a musician, but the family knew her as a listener and collector of stories. Kollock helped her granddaughter pick songs when she started street performing in high school. Her grandkids and neighbor kids she worked with got to perform with her at Christmas Eve. Later, she bought Zoë and Owen Turtle their first ukuleles, worked with Zoë when she picked up the violin at 6 and with Owen on piano. The power to play comes from the arms, she showed them, not the hands. Then, seated at her grand piano, she quizzed them with flashcards to learn their notes. Kollock insisted her grandchildren wash their hands. Nose flutes and affirmationsĪfter snacks of peanut butter and crackers or fruit and yogurt, Mrs. There, she met Arthur Rubinstein, who helped her career in the United States. She and her family lived in Spain while she performed in Europe. Kollock won three international piano competitions: The Bach International Competition, The Concurso Internacional de Piano and the Naumburg International Piano Competition. Each Christmas Eve, she welcomed family, friends and neighbors into her living room, passing out maracas, noisemakers and antler-horn headbands. Kollock still played professionally now and then and built a management company, Conductors International. Turtle later played the bass in a punk band. Turtle learned to play by ear, but didn’t aspire to make piano her life. She’d realized that the life of a concert pianist was a lonely one, she told her sister. Kollock and her sister performed together a few more times before the pianist decided to retire from concertizing. Kollock performed in her solo debut at Carnegie Hall. Mila Turtle doesn’t remember much from those early years in Europe, where her mother became a protégé of legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein, recorded an album and delighted audiences.Īfter her family returned to Ringwood, N.J., Turtle remembers drifting to sleep as her mother practiced. "She was a fabulous listener and incredible supporter." Kazoos all around "She was a very private person but when in a social situation, she worked the room, she made sure that she spoke to everyone and found out their story," sister Jane Shaulis said.
